The Scabs of Life

God used Dr. Kaufman to help heal the wound on top of foot!
God used Dr. Kaufman to help heal the wound on top of foot!

I realize that I've mostly seen scabs as a form of protection. I think that is partially true. I had my toenail removed off of my big toe in June, on the other foot! It has been an interesting process watching it do what it does. I had no idea what to expect since I'd never had a toenail removed. I just knew it looked pretty ugly. This black looking gook was slowly starting to dissipate.

When I went to my podiatrist, Dr. Kaufman today, I asked him not to touch it, just to look at it. We have a fun and good relationship. I know him. He comes in the room ready to start probing and prodding. I wanted no part of it! He held back for just a moment, and then asked, "Well, can I touch it with some saline?" I said, "Yes," but still didn't trust him. (I really do trust him.) As soon as he touched the toe with the saline gauze, he started pressing on it as though he was trying to remove the gook. I said, "I knew it! I knew you were going to do that!" Then, he got some scizzors to start cutting it away. Yep! I just about freaked out as he was saying, "You don't feel that. I can see right under it." In just about the blink of an eye, the scab was gone, and there was this beautiful, fresh, and new toenail underneath. I couldn't believe my eyes.

On the way home, I couldn't help but wonder about mental, emotional and spiritual scabs too. Are they possible? I think so. How long do we hold onto our scabs past the time they are actually protecting us? Are you hiding behind any scabs? Is there something that God has been trying to get your attention on

to let him remove it? He knows what's underneath because He is the ultimate healer.

I'm not sure I will ever look at scabs the same. They are there on purpose until it's time for removal. Thank God that He knows all about us, scabs and all. He also knows when it's time for the removal. Will you have that conversation with him today?

Bless you!

Oof! All the time, you have no idea! I’m out here feeling like Lot, just hesitating because I don’t want to let go of what is familiar. But the calling is so important that God can’t even let me mess it up — when it is time to remove the scab and show the world the new creation … he will!!

“The Scabs of Life” - Skip, your account of today’s appointment for the toe that had the nail removed is hilarious! Having walked through the seemingly unending foot experiences with you, I love that you could write such an entertaining account, and then turn it into a deeply spiritual lesson. Wow! Bravo, dear daughter!
